Our first stay at the James was great! We woudl definitely stay there again. It is in a great location and staff is very friendly and helpful. The ammenties service is great and the rooms are nice and clean. It has a small hotel bar with bites that we enjoyed. There can be a bit of street noise at night but it can easily be covered with white noise.

We stayed at The James while attending the National Restaurant show. To be fair, the room was booked under the NRA site so we were given a"reduced" rate. While the lobby was very open, modern, inviting, our room was not impressive. The view overlooked roof tops of neighboring buildings which were littered with trash. The walls and air/heat registers had "dings", in need of paint, carpeting was torn near the walls. The shower was not good, we had no hot water, don't know if it was just our room or particular wing? The beds were very comfortable, no outside noise could be heard from corridors or neighboring rooms, nice selection of soaps and lotions,so there were many positives as well. I would just say that I felt let down, compared to what I envisioned, after reading many positive reviews.

"Great staff and a prime location"

Stayed at The James for a meeting - the staff members were uniformly friendly and helpful, and the location is central. The meeting room was suboptimal in configuration, and it wasn't easy to find ones way between meeting rooms on the second floor. My guest room was in adequate condition, though the door frame was loose, and the room was rough around the edges due to wear since last being refreshed. The fitness center in the basement had multiple treadmills and elliptical machines, as well resistance trainer equipment - the treadmill on which I ran was in good working condition.

My daughter's "auntie" and I were in town for 3 nights to celebrate her graduation from the School of the Art Institute, and were so lucky to find a great deal at this hotel. We stayed three nights in a standard double double and I could not have been happier. The room and bathroom were plenty big, very clean and well maintained. The bed was extremely comfortable, we had a nice view of Lawry's and some highrises a few blocks away (no one staring in on us from across the street), and the amenities were copious (bathrobes, ordered in a microwave and mini fridge in addition to the bar cooler fridge, nice toiletries and they offer freebies of ones that you've forgotten, a fun banquette to lounge on). I should have requested a second luggage rack because without a dresser or other hard surface, I used a little ottoman for my rolling bag but had to bend over or use the bed for my backpack. The location is great, in River North, surrounded by restaurants and shops, a block from Michigan Avenue's big name shops, and four short blocks from the Red Line train station at "Grand." We walked from the Art Institute one afternoon because the weather was perfect. The hotel staff was very personable, very professional and very helpful: everyone on front desk was so pleasant and helpful, all the various door men smiled and one did me a big favor, and the head conciege Tim was the best -- fun to chat with, knowledgeable, helpful, courteous, attentive. The woman concierge on Tuesday was engrossed in her computer rather than looking at me as I was asking for some help -- after Tim, a big letdown. We did not eat in the Primehouse restaurant or visit the bar at the hotel.

"Work Meeting- Excellent!"

I held a 2-day team meeting at The James Chicago this week and it was outstanding! The rooms are clean and modern, the staff is friendly and the location is ideal for walking to Navy Pier, Michigan Ave shopping, and even the River North area. Brett Dreznick, Director of Catering was excellent to work with and readily available on-site for questions. Tim Samples is the best concierge I've ever met...all of his suggestions for dining were exactly what I was looking for and he is obviously highly regarded at restaurants in the area....we were treated like royalty when we mentioned that "Tim from the James sent us!" :) Rodrigo was our AV person who checked on us a couple times during the day to make sure everything was fine..also provided me with his cell phone number if I needed him. I would highly recommend this hotel for a business or personal stay! Top notch service!!
