The location,(now at $199 a night) is terrific, by Grant Park, The Loop, and walking and transportation are easily done in safety. The pleasant and helpful staff makes this hotel one we have returned to on our five trips to Chicago in recent years. But sadly,several room maintanence problems; plug in sink stuck in closed posittion, one bedlight not working,'tiles' begining to peel near tub, room phone getting only busy signal, mean we note the place seems on the path toward shabby.

Today is October 17, 2017. I’m here on a business trip and unfortunately I am incredibly disappointed by the caliber of high gene that this hotel offers. Unfortunately the room that I had booked for my business trip that is going to last the direction of six nights seven days has been booked and this horrible hotel. I’m not gonna get into the specifics as to how their fixtures plumbing heating and just general cleaning are below the average. I’m just gonna tell you to save your money and or spend more money to stay at another hotel. This place is A dump. I have all intentions of reaching out to management tomorrow morning to cancel the rest of my stay at this hotel so that I can stay at another location with another hotel. This place is a dump.

Unbelievably bad. Paid $500/night - I guess that's last-minute price, but still expected a pretty nice place for that kinda coin. This place is less pleasant than any dump I've stayed in ever. They put me in room 30 yards from where dudes are doing active, loud construction - at 14th floor. Expecting these guys to wake me early and loud tomorrow morning. Carpet moldy, smelly; room stuffy, and when I try to freshen it up with some AC I'm told that's not available. Oof. Then the TV doesn't work - at least not with the useless remote they gave me. Dan of engineering is nice enough to bring me a proper remote and a FAN, which is the best thing I've seen thus far. These folks really must understand that no one is really going to be the least bit pleased with these digs for these prices. Stay away.

We stayed here 5 years ago. What a drastic change! Our two room suite was filthy and housekeeping wanted to blame us. Two towels, one washcloth, and one hand towel for a room that sleeps six. The a/c-heat was not working and the room smelled terrible. My cousin, who has asthma, had an asthma attack due to the mold in the hallway and lack of ventilation in the room. We complained to the front desk and they moved us to another floor. Room was ok but still had ventilation issues. The staff was very accommodating and did the best they could. However had we not been locked in to a non-refundable rate, we’d have gone somewhere else. Other guests complained and were moved after they pointed out mold on the ceiling. They too were locked into their rate but got a 15% discount. We were not told of the construction going on or that the restaurant-bar was closed. When this was brought to the front desk’s attention they said it’s clearly stated on their web site. It is not. I can guarantee we will never stay at this flea bag hotel again. And the health department has also been contacted with regards to the mold issue. Don’t do it. The Hilton is right across the street if location is what you’re looking for.

Planning a sister weekend in Chicago Oct. 13 and 14 was pretty easy. We had stayed at the Essex about 5 years ago. Loved the rooms, staff, location, bar and restaurant. Looked at booking through their website then called and spoke to an employee of the Essex in August discussed accommodation needs along with cost. It was most cost effective to book through Essex website which I did and pre paid. When we go to the hotel on Friday major construction going on. Pool no more, no more bar, no more restaurant. When I checked in was told it was indicated on their website, (still don't see anywhere on their website about construction). Then we got to our Suite that we paid $235.00 a night for, and waited for them to finish cleaning, it smelled funky, bedroom dresser dirty, 2 towels 2 washcloths for a suite that was to sleep 5, carpet was dirty, air conditioner was barely working and smelled funky. My cousin who is asthmatic starting having an asthma attack. She scoped out our floor, 15 mold on the ceiling, same on floor 14, we requested a room change. Which the staff did accommodate us. Moved us to floor 11. Room air quality much better and a bit cleaner. After speaking to another guest in the elevator, who was on floor 14, she had the same issues. She however was offered a 15% discount on the room. We were not. Staff gets 5 stars, hotel room and amenities -1! I will not ever recommend or stay here again.
