"This place could be so much more"

I stayed here 6/20 - 6/22 for work. I had a conference across the street at The Blackstone. The room was bare bones. There was an ice bucket in the room, but no evidence that the hotel had an ice machine. There was a vending machine at the end of the hall that sold bottled water and sodas. Cash only. The view out of my window was of a giant pit in the ground where they were building luxury apartments next door. My boss had to lay towels down on top of the sheets so he could sleep. This place could be very cool with some renovations. Take a look at The Virgin Hotel. They have done amazing things with their space.

It's hard to know where to begin, this is one of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in. The room wasn't ready at 4pm check in, no apologies were made. We finally got in at 5.30, still no apologies. The room was very tired, clean(ish) but you wouldn't want to scrape the surface. One lamp had a shade which was bashed in, the other had a switch which was very temperamental. The TV didn't come on at all. The coffee machine hadn't been cleaned in a long while. The bed was comfortable enough and the shower wasn't bad, the two best bits. We were meant to stay two nights (prepaid as part of a road trip) but decided to use hotel points to move for the second night. This turned out to be a great choice as when we returned to our room to collect our things at 4.30pm, the room hadn't been cleaned. For a hotel in a great location, they could do so much better. Massively disappointing.

"Chicago was great....Essex Inn not so much"

I have to say that before I booked Chicago Essex Inn I had read about 2 dozen reviews. It was rated a 3 star hotel and for the price for 3 nights that included a trip with my husband and step daughter it seemed reasonable. The location is terrific, the front desk and concierge staff we're wonderful. Those were the two good things about it. When i made the reservation I had to make the reservation that included my daugther, so there were 3 of us listed. Each day we rec'd 2 towels for 3 of us and one bar of soap, that we had to break in half so we'd have some for the shower and sink. The beds were full size beds and so uncomfortable that after 2 days of being back from vacation my back still aches. Every time my husband would move it was if being in a water bed because I would move with him. The last night he finally had it and slept on the floor. I called on Friday evening and asked if I could rent a cot of some sort and was told it would be against "fire code" because the rooms were so small. Any where else 2 beds for 3 people would have slept comfortably, but not here. So make sure you're paying attention to what size beds you're getting. I had my step daughter pack her suit, hoping that if we had time later in the evening to relax she could swim, when we checked in and took a look around the hotel we ran into a housekeeper in the hallway, I asked what floor the pool was on and she laughed at me, "there's no pool" she said. On their website it lists a pool and shows pictures, they no longer have a pool due to construction...would have been good to know and not worth the laugh in my face by hotel staff. It was also loud, we were placed directly from the elevators and were woken up consistently all night long as the walls are thin. The elevators were incredibly slow and one out of working condition so when they did finally come to your floor you were crammed with anywhere between 8-10 other guests who had been eagerly waiting as well. We travel quite a bit and this was not our first time in Chicago, my step daughter could have cared less about the accommodations, but even if the cost was exactly the same next time we headed that direction I would avoid this hotel at all costs. Just a warning for other intended guests. Location is not everything, you also have to get a good nights sleep and be comfortable for the little time you're actually in the hotel room in order to enjoy the city and its sights.

"Reasonable place for a reasonable price"

Spent one night here while attending a conference nearby. While the room was small, it was clean and everything functioned well. It is an older property so some things show signs of wear, but nothing that got in the way of my stay. I would consider staying here again if coming to Chicago. The price is pretty reasonable for downtown.

Cockroaches in the bathroom and not even a discount on a $700 two night stay. Pretty miserable considering the inflated price. Would strongly advise against staying here. I am not even afraid of bugs, but when faced with the situation we were in, I would have expected some sort of accommodation.
