Historic Chicago Walking Bar Tour in Chicago IL

Join us for a historic Chicago pub crawl with an educational twist! You’ll explore Chicago’s entertainment history and learn about prohibition, jazz, theater, vices, and social clubs, all while staying mostly indoors.

On this tour, guests interact with historic photos and videos on shared iPads and visit historic buildings for three drink stops. We don’t walk far on our evening walking tour, giving us more time to engage with Chicago history and look at architecture. The limited walking distance on the tour gives us time to enjoy our appetizers and choice of wine or beer.

Tour groups see magnificent lobbies and really engage with some beautiful historic architecture. Many tour guests enjoy the social dynamic of this unique tour. Solo travelers often join the tour. Also as a great Chicago date idea, it can be a fun thing to do in Chicago with your boyfriend or girlfriend. Groups of friends make the tour into a cool weekend event as it’s more than a historic Chicago pub crawl – you’ll eat, drink, and learn about architecture, Prohibition-era history, and culture.

We’d like to say it’s a Speakeasy Tour or a Chicago Prohibition Tour, but truthfully very few bars in Chicago remaining today were ever speakeasies. We did find one stop on our tour that was a true speakeasy though! The Historic Chicago Bar Walking Tour is like a mix of a food tour, an architecture walking tour, and a mobile documentary film. Book your tour early as the historic Chicago pub crawl often sells out. It’s a unique Chicago thing to do!

Chicago Bar Tour Highlights:

  • Michigan Ave/Magnificent Mile
  • Tribune Tower
  • Intercontinental Hotel
  • Chicago Underground
  • Billy Goat Tavern
  • Phil Stefani’s 437 Rush (early jazz club and speakeasy)

  • Private clubs

Walking Bar Tour Includes:
  • Engaging tour guide commentary
  • Shared use of iPads with historic photos and video clips
  • Gift packets
  • Appetizers

Walking Tour Does Not Include:
  • Drinks and server gratuities. All guests must choose a beverage for the walking tour and bring cash to cover 2.5 servings of beer ($20), wine ($22), soda ($6) or water ($3).

We meet inside Argo Tea at 435 N. Michigan Ave, which is Tribune Tower. Look for the guide with the name tag and clipboard. We make a circle so that the tour ends one block north of our starting point.

1893 World Fair's Tour with Bar and Food in Chicago IL

A combination of food and drink with incredible architecture, fascinating historical stories of turn-of-the-century Chicago, and visual scavenger hunts and clue-based games.

This very special walking tour digs into how and why the 1893 World’s Fair captures our imaginations more than any other event in Chicago history. Unlike other World’s Fair tours and Devil in the White City tours, which likely revolve around facts and trivia, we dig deeper. We dug through archives, studied photographs, and designed games to devise a fun and insightful walking tour.

This walking tour is much more than just a tour! The food and beer on our tour connect with stories of the 1893 World’s Fair. With just intermittent walks outside, the 1893 World’s Fair Tour makes for a great walking tour this spring and summer.

We did serious sleuthing to create a downtown tour of the few remaining buildings from the time of the World’s Fair. People think that you have to go south of downtown to understand the history of the World’s Fair, but it’s impact on the architecture and landscape of downtown Chicago is still visible today.

Tours that identify distinctly as “food tours” have guests eat a ton of food. On our walking tour we will eat a pleasant amount that can comprise a light meal.

Think of this 3-hour-long walking tour as broken up as 5% outdoors, 95% indoors, 20% clue-based games and visual scavenger hunts, 20% food and drink time, and 100% awesome historical tour time. We know the math doesn’t add up – we hope you get the idea!

1893 World’s Fair Walking Tour Highlights
Colorful mosaics in a hotel built for the 1893 World’s Fair
The sweeping grand lobby of the Auditorium Building
Ride one of the last elevators downtown with a human operator
Delicious German food at the Berghoff Restaurant
A secret alley building
The opulent Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, once an exclusive men’s club
